How Dermaplaning Resurfaces and Rejuvenates Your Skin

If traditional facials and peels aren’t giving your skin the luminous look you want, dermaplaning is an excellent option. This treatment will leave your skin fresh, fierce, and glowing!

Achieving younger, healthier-looking skin is only part of the story of dermaplaning. You can expect a wide range of benefits from this minimally invasive therapy. Let’s get into what dermaplaning is, and what you can expect from this fantastic treatment!

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning removes hair growth and the top layer of dead skin cells using a small implement called a dermatome. The tool resurfaces the skin and removes dead cells to reveal healthy tissue underneath. Exfoliation is a safe and effective way to brighten skin without chemical peels.

During your appointment, the esthetician will gently shave off years of sun-damaged skin, among other concerns. And besides glowing skin, the procedure provides other health benefits.

Which skin concerns does dermaplaning help correct?

The exfoliating power of dermaplaning addresses many common skin concerns. Typically, the treatment reduces the appearance of fine lines, dull skin, acne scars, and peach fuzz. Regular applications also even skin texture and reduce signs of sun damage. Even those of us with sensitive skin can benefit due to the gentle nature of the therapy.

How does dermaplaning compare to other resurfacing treatments?

Regardless of your skin texture, dermaplaning has something to offer. Some other skin resurfacing treatments are more invasive and require extended recovery periods. Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion address some similar concerns, but don’t have the added benefit of hair removal.

For dry skin or skin with more hair than you like, less intense exfoliation is precisely what the doctor ordered. In fact, those with drier skins benefit greatly because this helps to remove the top dead layer of skin so that hydrating products can actually penetrate instead of just sitting on top!

Who cannot receive a dermaplaning treatment?

As with any application, some won’t benefit from it. Almost all skin types can benefit from dermaplaning, but avoid it if you’re in an active acne breakout or have cold sores. The scraping motion during the procedure can make these concerns worse. Wait until these have subsided to schedule your appointment.

Significant skin concerns like psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema mean it isn’t an excellent fit for you. Ask your esthetician for alternatives that can target your skin concerns.

What to expect from a dermaplaning appointment at illume

As with all appointments at illume, our standard policies and procedures apply. 72 hours before, you’ll get a reminder to prepare for your treatment. Take that time to follow these helpful tips!

Preparing and arriving to your appointment

Hydrate in the days leading up to your salon booking and inspect your face for any wounds that might make dermaplaning a poor choice. If you use exfoliating skincare products, or serums containing retinol, put them away for a week leading up to the appointment.
Make sure to chat with your esthetician before the skin regimen so you both understand your goals.

During your dermaplaning treatment

The actual process itself is painless. At worst, you may experience a slight tingle or minimal friction of the blade during treatment, but it’s all part of the process.

We use a dermatome to remove vellus hair, or peach fuzz, and dead skin. If this is your first booking, we’re happy to show you the tools of the trade ahead of time!

Depending on the extent of your therapy, expect to spend between forty-five to ninety minutes in the salon. Here at illume, we have several dermaplaning options such as a stand-alone service, full facial, full facial with brightening & hydrating peel as well as a full facial with peel & firming peptide mask!

Helpful dermaplaning aftercare tips to avoid breakouts

One unpleasant side effect is the appearance of whiteheads or bumps after a session. There are a few reasons this occurs. If you’ve got a breakout under the surface, exposing new skin brings it up. Your skin may also purge impurities under the surface.

Using a gentle cleanser and avoiding makeup for a few days reduces the likelihood of a breakout. Another helpful aftercare tip is to clean or replace any makeup brushes to remove bacteria that can cause infection.

Other frequently asked questions about dermaplaning

If you’ve got more questions about dermaplaning before you’re ready to book with us, we hear you. Any procedure comes with plenty of unknowns. We’ve gathered the most common FAQs here for you.

How long do the results from dermaplaning last?

Because the procedure targets the surface of your skin, the results aren’t permanent. You should expect to see results for several weeks after treatment, but they’ll fade in a month or so. The procedure removes around three weeks' worth of dead skin cells and hair.

How often should you book a dermaplaning appointment?

Depending on how your skin reacts to your treatment, you can book appointments every three to four weeks. Your goals may affect how often you seek this treatment. Those with faster hair growth will see the results fade sooner as well.

Why shouldn’t you try dermaplaning at home?

Despite what you see on TikTok or Instagram, dermaplaning at home isn’t easy. In fact, there are considerable risks if you’re picking up a blade on your own. Trained estheticians have guidelines they use when applying invasive exfoliating techniques that protect clients. The likelihood that you’ll experience complications goes up if you try at home. The blades over the counter are only meant to remove hair and not dirt and debris so you are not getting the full benefits of an actual dermaplaning treatment.

A sterile environment, professional-grade tools, and a lifetime of experience make the esthetician’s office safer than your bathroom. Outside of the salon, infections, nicks, and breakouts are more likely to occur. Leave even minimally invasive procedures to the professionals for the best results!
